The complete guide to understanding European football's ranking system
Points earned by individual clubs over the past 5 seasons. Higher coefficients place clubs in better seeding pots during European competition draws, meaning easier opponents.
The combined performance of all clubs from a country over 5 seasons, divided by the number of participating clubs. This ranking determines how many Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League spots each nation receives.
The coefficient point values (2 for win, 1 for draw) remain the same, but the bonus structure changed to accommodate the new format with position-based bonuses instead of group qualification bonuses.
Points earned from individual game results during the competition.
Applies to League Phase and knockout matches. Qualifying rounds have different values (see ECL tab).
Points awarded based on League Phase finish and knockout progression.
Position bonus uses a linear scale: 1st place gets most, 24th gets least.
CL Example: 12 match pts + 9.75 position bonus + 3 KO bonus = 24.75 points
| Win (Q1, Q2, Q3, Playoff) | +1 |
| Draw (Q1, Q2, Q3, Playoff) | +0.5 |
Qualifying match points are half of league phase. No elimination bonus - clubs drop to EL/ECL.
| Win | +2 |
| Draw | +1 |
| Loss | 0 |
| 1st - 8th(Auto R16) | +12.00 โ +10.25 |
| 9th - 24th(Playoff) | +10.00 โ +6.25 |
| 25th - 36th(Eliminated) | +6.00 |
| Reach Round of 16 | +1.5 |
| Reach Quarter-finals | +1.5 |
| Reach Semi-finals | +1.5 |
| Reach Final | +1.5 |
Maximum knockout bonus: 6 points (R16 + QF + SF + Final)
| Pot | Teams | Selection Criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Pot 1 | 9 teams | Top 8 by club coefficient + CL title holder |
| Pot 2 | 9 teams | Next 9 by club coefficient |
| Pot 3 | 9 teams | Next 9 by club coefficient |
| Pot 4 | 9 teams | Remaining 9 (lowest coefficients + qualifiers) |
Title holder rule: The defending CL champion is placed in Pot 1 regardless of their coefficient. If they already qualify for Pot 1 by coefficient, the next-highest club moves up.
Europa & Conference League: Same pot system applies. EL uses 4 pots of 9 (36 teams); ECL uses 4 pots of 9 (36 teams). Title holders get Pot 1 placement in their respective competition.
The country coefficient for a season is calculated by adding all points earned by clubs from that country, then dividing by the number of clubs that participated. The 5-year total determines European competition spots.
| Season | Top 2 Countries | Extra CL Entrants |
|---|---|---|
| 2023/24 | Italy, Germany | Bologna, Dortmund entered 2024/25 CL |
| 2024/25 | England, Spain | Newcastle, Villarreal entered 2025/26 CL |
The 5th-place club from the qualifying country enters the CL league phase directly. The same point system applies (wins, draws, bonuses), but only the current season counts โ not the rolling 5-year total.
Since 2024/25, UEFA uses a separate 10-year coefficient to distribute a portion of Champions League prize money. This is distinct from the 5-year sporting coefficient used for seeding and spot allocation.
This site tracks the 5-year sporting coefficient, which is the one that affects competition access, seeding, and on-pitch competitive outcomes.
The EuroCoef All-Time Rating is a proprietary composite score that rewards both longevity and peak quality across all recorded UEFA coefficient seasons (1989โpresent). Unlike the official 5-year rolling coefficient, this metric captures a club's entire European history in a single number.
A club ranked #3 for 10 seasons and #25 for 15 seasons:
UEFA has updated the coefficient calculation system several times to adapt to changes in European competition formats.
| Era | Country % | Qualifying Pts | Main Phase Bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024+ League Phase | 20% floor | 0.5-1 pts | Position bonus (6-12 CL) |
| 2018-23 Group Stage | 20% floor | None (CL) | 4 pts (group qual) |
| 2009-17 | 20% | 0.5-2.5 pts | 4 pts |
| 2004-08 | 33% | Varied | 3 pts |
| 1999-03 | 50% | Half value | 1 pt |
| Pre-1999 | 0% | Full value | None |
Note: In 2024, UEFA replaced the Group Stage (8 groups of 4 teams, 6 games) with the League Phase (single league of 36 teams, 8 games). This changed the bonus structure from fixed group qualification bonuses to position-based bonuses.
Points are calculated over a rolling 5-year period. Each summer, the oldest season drops off and the new season is added. For example, the 2025/26 ranking uses seasons from the last 5 years.
The 5-year country coefficient ranking. Ranks 1-5 get 4 CL spots, rank 6 gets 3, ranks 7-15 get 2, and ranks 16+ get 1. Lower-ranked countries enter through earlier qualifying rounds.
Clubs are placed into pots based on their coefficient (and title holders). Higher coefficient = Pot 1 seeding = easier group opponents. This applies to Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League draws.
Yes, but at 50% value. If a club earns 10 points in ECL, only 5 count toward the country coefficient. The club keeps all 10 for their individual ranking.
Since 2018, a club's coefficient cannot fall below 20% of their country's average (country coefficient รท 5). This ensures clubs from top nations maintain reasonable seeding even after poor European campaigns.
Yes. For country coefficients, qualifying wins earn 1 point and draws 0.5 (half the main phase value). Clubs receive compensation points based on the round reached, not individual match results.
When coefficients are equal, the team/country with more points in the most recent differing season ranks higher. Recent form beats historical consistency.
They earn 0 points that season but keep their previous 4 seasons' points. After 5 years without European football, a club's coefficient resets to the 20% minimum floor of their country.
Since 2024/25, the top 2 countries by single-season coefficient each earn a 5th Champions League league phase spot for the following season. For example, Italy and Germany topped 2023/24, so Bologna and Dortmund entered the 2024/25 CL. The same points system applies, but only the current season counts.
A separate ranking introduced in 2024/25 that uses a 10-season rolling window instead of 5. It is used solely for distributing a portion of Champions League prize money (the 'coefficient share') and does not affect seeding, pots, or competition access.
In the Champions League, a portion of the prize pool is distributed as a 'coefficient share' based on each participating club's 10-year coefficient ranking. Clubs with stronger long-term European records receive a larger share, independent of their current-season results. This is separate from the 5-year sporting coefficient used for seeding.
A proprietary composite score that rewards both longevity and peak quality across all recorded UEFA coefficient seasons (1989-present). Each season a club is ranked, they earn max(0, 101 โ rank) points. These are summed across all seasons to produce a single all-time number. See the full explanation above.
